Brass is an alloy which is used in making a wide range of items like clocks, sculptures, utensils or vessels for storing water. This is a mixture of zinc with copper. Although brass items make for precious antique pieces, their maintenance can be difficult.

Some items are only coated with brass but made of steel or iron. Before commencing the process of cleaning or polishing, one should test the item using a magnet. If the magnet does not get stuck, one can proceed as follows.

• Fill a sink with warm water, add liquid soap in it. Allow the item to stay in this for sometime. Then, clean it using a soft cloth, wipe it dry with a damp and then a dry cloth. If the item already has lacquer coating, the best way is to boil the item in water for as long as the coating comes away.
• Rub the item using 'isopropyl' on sponge. Once it is completed, clean it using a damp cloth, then wipe it using yellow-treated wash cloth. Subsequently, shine it by buffing.

Solution for cleaning brass can be prepared at home by mixing juice of half a piece of lemon and table salt. Instead of table salt, you can also use baking soda. This can be applied on the brass object using cloth. If the brass object is small in size, you can use a toothbrush to ally the brass cleaning solution. After application of the solution, the object has to be washed using cold water and then polished subsequently.

Solution using white vinegar along with salt, or yogurt with lime juice can also make great cleaning agents.

Polishing can be also done using couple of drops of olive oil or juice of lime and rubbing the object gently.
